Christ in Christmas

Why CHRISTMAS means more than gifts, gadgets and good food…

There is something amazing about this time of year. It’s the time of year where people are thinking less about themselves and more about others. Sure, many of us wonder what gifts of love will come our way but mostly what gifts we can give. Stores are filled with footsteps big and small and the computer mouse on thousands of laptops are clicking non stop as people add to cart carefully picked gifts for their loved ones.

Our loved ones are also showered with words of love through cards, songs and echoes of “Happy Holidays” as they pass by strangers on the streets filled with Christmas lights and holiday cheer. It’s the perfect time to reach out to those we haven’t talked to for a while or plan a family dinner to recall the best of the year, as children unwrap their gifts under the Christmas tree.

Could we add more depth to Christmas? Could we reach back to the origins of the holiday and recall the true reason for the season? Could we remind the world that Christ is the greatest gift of all?  Because as each decade goes by, we have managed to align this joyous season with reindeer, Santa Claus, stocking stuffing and candy canes, without aligning our hearts with Jesus.

As it is told the wise men brought gifts to honor the birth of Jesus. Today, gift giving is a way to not only buy your loved ones something they’ve always wanted, it’s a way to honor the spirit of Christ within them. When you give a gift, you keep Christ in Christmas, even if you didn’t know it. He lives in us and through us.  So, as we share and spread holiday cheer, we are also sharing and spreading the good news of a Savior, peace, healing and wholeness.

Knowing this allows us to take in all the good deeds in a new perspective. It allows us to see the beauty in sharing our spiritual values along with the generous gifts. It empowers us to rekindle and relive the joy of salvation in our hearts by demonstrating the love Christ shared with us.  Because as beautiful as the lights are on the Christmas trees, the light within us will always shine the brightest and reach the farthest.
